Childhood glaucoma is frequently caused by genetic variant(s). The genetic variant(s) can start in a child, or be inherited from one or both parents.
Some childhood glaucomas are associated with other systemic diseases. Genetic testing can identify whether there may be other health concerns that should be monitored.
Parents of an affected child who are planning to have additional children may also be tested to identify whether or not they also have the genetic variant as this may impact their family planning decisions. Genetic counselling can help parents to make decisions for their family.
Researchers are working to better understand the mechanisms which cause childhood glaucoma.
Having a better understanding of the genes that cause glaucoma, and how they impact the eye’s development and management of glaucoma, will be crucial for advancing research. If a child has been diagnosed with glaucoma, they may be able to receive genetic testing.
