My son Larkin was 2 months old when he was diagnosed with Congenital Glaucoma.
It all started when he had a very fussy and a sleepless night (which was unlike him). We finally got to fall asleep around 6 am and woke up around 12 pm. When Larkin woke up he looked at me and his right eye was cloudy and his iris and pupil where indeterminable.
I called the pediatrician, went to their office, then they sent us straight to Cincinnati Children’s Ophthalmology department where they preformed multiple eye exams to diagnose him which congenital glaucoma. His ocular pressure in his right eye was 62 and his left was 32. They immediately introduced 4 types of drops for each eye and one oral liquid medication that Larkin had to receive 4 times a day.
There was more severe damage to his right eye due to the increase pressure which caused the cloudiness of the right eye.
Larkin was then scheduled for a bilateral trabeculectomy 4 days later. We were due back in the office the day after surgery, weekly appointments then we progressed to every 6 weeks at this point (he is now 8 months old).
His ocular pressures are maintained between 16-21, which is where the surgeon would like him to stay! Now we are on to patching his left eye due to his right eye having a more severe case of glaucoma and more damage but it has been a struggle since he’s at the age of grabbing everything and wanting to rip the patch off. So we are learning to help him cope, at this time.
At this point of his diagnosis we are living day to day and appointment to appointment to determine if any more interventions at this time. Thank you for listening to our story!
